Designing with AI: Moving Beyond the Hype into the Workflow
AI isn't here to replace the design process. It is here to enhance it. Here is how I am currently applying AI across the standard design stages to gain speed without losing the soul of the work.
The PRD Brainstorm (From Zero to Context)
I now use AI as a sparring partner to stress-test the Product Requirement Document (PRD) and get inspiration with different mock-ups with Claude Design.
Synthesis & Research Insights
We have great data insights, but it can take work to consolidate all of those. With Claude Cowork is is easier to act upon data, helping me to make more informed decisions.
High-Fi Prototyping & Component Logic
Generating high-fi prototypes to get a feel for the journey you are designing helps. I do this in Claude Design or Claude Code, depending on the scope of things.
Validation (The "Stress Test")
The main benefit is that AI generated prototypes can quickly show you different states, like empty, extreme data or error states. This ensures your prototype is validated properly.
The goal isn't to let the AI design the product. The goal is to use AI to handle the "predictable" parts of the process so we can focus on the "unpredictable" parts: human emotion, brand nuances, and complex problem-solving.
Speed is great, but intentionality is better.
Also, suddenly my design process is supported end-to-end by Claude, which has the main benefit that I can fully optimize it to my preferences with skills and the overall setup. More about that in a next post!
Which part of your design process still feels like it has the most friction?
